I have an ion usb turntable which has 2 recording speeds, 33 1/3 and 45 RPM. According to the features it says you can record 78RPM records using the enclosed software wich is audacity 1.2.6 version. Anyone know how this is done?
Personally I think this is a bit of a con. The ion turntable can not play at 78 RPM (rotations per minute) but what you can do with Audacity is to record the 78 record into Audacity, then use Audacity to speed it up.
The procedure is to record the track with the turntable playing at 45 rpm, then with the track selected, choose “Effects → Change Speed”. Set the “Change Speed” effect to: “Standard Vinyl RPM from 45 to 78”. Click on “OK”.
To finish you must “Export” the audio track, either as a wav if you want to burn it to CD, or as an mp3 if you want to put it on an mp3 player.

be aware that you should be using a different stylus for 78’s - they are larger and normally conical rather than elliptical. IIRC ION can supply a 78 Stylus for you.
Also be aware that standards were not properly in place in the time of 78’s - so they play at speeds close to 78 - and this often varied by manufacturer.
Note too, that the other non-standardized thing at the time of 78’s is the RIAA equalisation curve used. Each manufacture used their own RIAA - and this is different to the vinyl RIAA curve that the ION applies for you. The good news is that Audacity has pre-programmed, in its Equalisation effect, the RIAA curves used by the major manufacturers of 78s - so you can select the curve you need (but note that this will have to be applied to the project after recording).
