Broken link

Post by Bronxio » Wed May 12, 2021 12:12 pm

Sorry, but didn't found any other place to report this. This is not about the forum, but about the audacityteam.org website.

Links for the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Packages are not working anymore on the legacy Windows page: https://www.audacityteam.org/download/legacy-windows/

I don't know if those download link could be replaced by this one instead: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downloa ... x?id=26368

If that's not the case, I've found the 32-bit on CNET, but not the 64-bit version: https://download.cnet.com/Microsoft-Vis ... 51140.html

Cheers!

I've fixed up the page to what I think is correct. I'm not a Windows expert, so I've asked the Audacity developers if someone can take a look and check that the links are now correct.

Support for Windows 7 is now becoming impossible as Microsoft are rapidly deleting Windows 7 updates from their download library.
As Windows 8.1 reached the end of Mainstream Support on January 9, 2018, it's likely that they will soon do the same for Windows 8.1.

Awesome! ^-^ Just in case this could help, I've just made a succesful test in a Windows machine without the 2008 version, but with other Visual C++ versions installed. Here is the info:

Machine:
  • Intel Celeron CPU 2.66 GHz
  • 2 GB
  • Windows 7 Professional SP1 (x86), with all critical updates made for it and all (or almost all) optional ones
  • Audacity 2.3.3

Microsfot Visual C++ installed:
  • Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable
  • Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 x86 Redistributable - 10.0.40219
  • Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable (x86) - 12.0.21005
  • Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable (x86) - 14.0.24212

Audacity startep up normally, with no problems.

I don't know how those Visual C++ (libraries?) work. Perhaps it's not necessary to have the 2008 version specifically? If anyone ask me to, I can uninstall those Visual C++ next time I visit the building where is it and check what happens, that's not an important machine now if something fails 😁

Cheers!
