Not sure if a bug, but by default, there is a check mark indicating on quick glance at least to me, that i am automatically subscribed. Just when reading (or no notification for replies) i noticed i have to hit it to subscribe.
Certainly user error, but i find it more intuitive if the check mark only appears when subscribed
