Hi,
I have two copies of the same LP and I recorded both and I managed to "align" then reasonably well. Now I would like clean up then by averaging the two tracks. Anyone have tried that and can suggest a plugin for the job?

There is the obscure problem that you don't get half the noise even if you do succeed. Noise goes up and down as the square root. If you add two and two, you don't get one. You get one point four something. Almost not worth the effort. To get significant noise reduction, you have to add up four or more performances. And that's assuming the came cat hair didn't click in the same place each time.
Did you try the click removal tools? They work by sensing sounds clearly outside the range of the average performance. They can do a remarkable job of cleaning up vinyl.
Or is the exercise to make this work and it doesn't matter what the outcome is? What kind of turntable do you have? Unless you have a crystal-controlled motor or one of the older power line synchronized ones, the performance is always going to drift over time.

Since you're going to all the trouble or recording twice, then aligning and then on to veraging - you might want to consider a piece of software developed by a retired Australian mathematician, Brian Davies. See this sticky thread: http://audacityteam.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=1994 - it costs a little, but is well worth the outlay for the time it saves IMHO - it did an excellent job on my LPs. Brian lets you have a 21-day free trial so you can always test it out before purchasing.
You should also make sure that you clean your records as thoroughly as possible before playing them - but I'm probably teaching my granny to suck eggs with this advice, given the trouble you are currently going to
