Recording sustained tones

I just downloaded Audacity 1.3.7 (Unicode). It records short tones fine, but any sustained tone (or tones) over a couple of seconds drops off into a wispy whiney tunnely sound at low volume. If I stop the tone, and keep on recording, the next occurrence of the tone seems to pick up at normal volume, but the same thing happens again after a few seconds.
Thanks,
doubtless

You are probably using a fairly modern computer with on-board sound card, possibly "RealTek", and have some kind of "Automatic Gain Control" (AGC), noise suppression, or echo cancellation type effect enabled. Look in the sound-card control panel (thoroughly - these settings can be very hard to find) and switch off all effects. They may be listed in the "Microphone" section of the sound card control panel.

Thanks,
Sorry for the long delay in responding, but I had thought that I would be notified by email when someone made a reply. I will check into the settings you mentioned. Again, thanks. Have a blessed day.
