audio cleaning reduce background volume sounds

Hi,
assuming I have an audio file of about 1 minute in length. The problem here is when you play the file, you clearly hear the main vocals sitting on top of the mix and then you hear some low level volume background music/sounds. It is really low level, but still kinda present throughout the whole spectrum frequency, so it's not just sub frequencies. Isn't there a technique/software or even audacity plugin/effect to reduce low level music material from higher level material. Keep in mind I don't want to damage the vocals. Thanks
