no audio on media player

Post by ohiogemstone » Wed Jun 30, 2010 5:45 pm

I am trying to convert cassettes to cds using Audacity. I save the project (song) and it will play back on Audacity. I export it so I can have it on media player...and it shows it playing but I have no audio sound on media player.

I am new at this and not sure what the problem is or what to do to solve the problem.

I did lp albums with my turntable and finally got it working ok after I downloaded the Audacity beta version...but am not sure what to do with the cassette unit.

There's a few possibilities - here's some questions that will hopefully narrow it down:

Are you recording from a USB device?
Which (exact) version of Audacity are you using? (look in Audacity "Help > About Audacity")
Do other files play correctly on media player?
Do you know (exactly) what format you have exported as?
Do you have any other media player to test the exported files?
If you import the file back into Audacity, does it still play?

(any other information that may be relevant? We love lot's of details :) )

I am using a Grace Digital Audio Tape Deck that hooks to the pc with a USB cable.

I am using the Audacity 1.3.12-beta (Unicode) version.

Yes, I can play other files on Media Player without a problem.

I have been exporting the files in MP3 format.

I havent used any other media player but the Windows Media Player and I havent tried to import the files back to Audacity.

Try playing this file in Media Player.
piano.mp3
(160.49 KiB) Downloaded 110 times
If it plays, open Audacity and import (or drag and drop) the file into Audacity, then export it as "piano2.mp3"
Does piano2.mp3 play in media player?

If "piano2.mp3" does not play in media player, attach it to your reply (there is an "Upload" option below the message editing screen)

I tried it and it is the same...but now I cant get Windows Media Player to have audio at all. I tried to play a cd and it is the same..no audio.

I dont know what is wrong...or how to fix it. It is aggravating...and I cant sit for long periods of time to try to figure things out. As of recently, I have a cracked tailbone and it is difficult to sit for long.

I thought that might be the case, but was confused by your previous post.

The problem is that Windows will usually set both recording and playback to the USB device as soon as the USB device is detected. This means that sound no longer comes out through your sound card. To fix this you need to go into the Windows Control Panel and re-enable your sound card for playback.

The exact details of how to do this depends on your operating system, but if you are using Vista or Windows 7, see here for how to access the "Sounds" settings in the Control Panel: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Mixer ... es#vistacp
Then go to the "Playback" Tab and enable your speakers/sound-card.

After you have done this once your computer should remember the settings.

Have you accidentally switched on the mute button on the Windows media player ? ...

Thank you......... :)

I went into control panel and got it working now.

I was beginning to wonder if I made a mistake by buying this unit, with all the trouble I was having. I have a LOT of cassettes that I want to transfer onto cds--some that aren't available on cds (older ones.) Now I will be able to convert them and listen to them in my van, etc. (a little at a time as I heal.)

THANK YOU for all your help and patience. Have a great Fourth of July holiday weekend !!!!!!!!!
