Even with modern processors, good, high quality convolution reverb is still pretty heavy (and Audacity does not yet support multiple processors), but yes, if you think that you can write a sufficiently efficient convolution reverb... 
Probably the easiest way to get a working install of Freeverb on Linux is to install a package that includes it (for example "cmt").
If you use Jack, Freeveb can be used as a real time effect in Jack Rack (it will be listed as an "Uncategorised" effect if you have it installed).
