filtering streaming audio

Post by Dogbreath100 » Fri Jul 31, 2009 9:47 pm

I have some old video recordings. Is it possible to stream the audio portion into my computer, filter out unwanted noise, elevate voice levels and stream it into a DVD recorder in sync with the video portion for a clean audio?

Lots of slippery words there.

<<<Is it possible to stream the audio portion into my computer>>>

You can play the tapes on a connected player and capture the sound on your Mac or Large Deskside PC. Probably not your Windows Laptop.

<<<filter out unwanted noise>>>

Filter out unwanted noise. One. The noise tools fail on noise that's moving or changing. Background air conditioner or hiss, yes, MetroBus rumble, no.

<<<elevate voice levels>>>

Elevate the sound levels. Separating voices from a performance is hard work to get terrible results -- almost always.

<<<stream it into a DVD recorder in sync with the video portion for a clean audio?>>>

You can export the clean sound as a WAV file at 48000, 16-bit, Stereo and drop that right into your video editor. iMovie, Premiere, Final Cut, Avid. Shuck and Jive with the sound editing tools. From there, you can drop the new audio/video composite into the DVD authoring program, iDVD, Studio Pro, Windows DVD Maker (Vista) and burn a nice Movie DVD.

You could try to do this hot into a DVD burner, but there's no way to cue the two players, so the chances of success at the beginning are pretty much zero and they get worse as you get further into the show.

Oh, and Audacity doesn't do anything in real time, so it's going to be five or six hours to process an hour performance and that's very conservative.

Commercial production generally plans ten to one. Ten hours of production to get a one hour show.
