High pitched buzzing when recording

This is not a request for help but to advise of a strange recording problem and its solution.

I recently began to use audacity for recording. Whenever I tried to record there was a high pitched electronic buzz overwhelming the desired input signal After much playing with cables and plugs I was amazed to find that the cause was the "ethernet over the power network" box that I using. The earthing in the apartment is poor so that probably does not help but for sure with the ethernet box out of the power socket the noise was gone
