Audacity not receiving input

Audacity not receiving input
When playing instrument through the mic input, I can hear through my monitors, but not recieving any signal to the meter or the record mode. All preferences have been checked. All computer volumes are up and not muted. When I double click on the meter mic icon, it shows that it is trying to work but no signal gets through. I have 2 sound cards and have tried both. Anyone know how to open up or fix the receiving of the sound?? Thanks.

Probably not.
Depending on your version of Windows, there are two sound panels, record and playback. It's perfectly possible to hear a microphone or other show and not have any recording at all.
