Newbie Cannot Record

I recently installed Audacity 1.2.6. I tried to record an audio stream that was coming through my speakers. When I pressed record, a flat line went accross the screen. I do not have a clue where to go from here. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I printed out the manual, but could find nothing to help me.
Also, I tried using the mixer toolbar, but it was empty. Just an an empty box that said audacity mixer tool bar.

Have a look in the "Tutorials" (link at top of page).
For specific questions, please specify what sort of computer you have and what your operating system is (and any other information that you think may be useful).

CPU Intel E8400
