Trouble Recording

Hey im bit new to this whole thing but im trying to recored songs so i import the back ground music and then recored a vocal track but when i recored the vocal track the background music recoreds as well so i tired playin muisc on a diffrent app e.g windows media player and it recored the muisc that was play on that is there a way to stop this?

Are you sending the backing to a mixer? In recording multiple guitar tracks, I always send the backing track to another device (amplifier via CD input) where I can listen via headphones, and record direct to the mic/line in ports from my effects board, using the amp as a monitor. That always separtes the backing from the recorded track. If I send the backing track to my effects board and record from it, I get the backing recording as well.
