Tape snagged

I listen to a lot of internet radio and often tape bits and pieces.
After the tape snagged for the 3rd time in one week, Im thinking of giving up tape and
recording digitally into audacity.

Is there any way I can keep recording in the same file... just adding bits till the file is say about
1 hour long ?

There's several approaches that you can take.
You can simply pause the recording ("P" key or click the pause button) then resume.
You can stop the recording, then "Append Record" ("Transport menu > Append Record" or "shift + R")
You could record several short sections and export each as a separate WAV file, then create a new project and import each of the WAV files into the project and arrange them as you want (using the Time Shift tool and/or "Tracks menu > Align Tracks > Align End to End".

Thanks for info , yes I know about the pause and then hit pause again to restart... but I'm thinking of
a recording that might be over 6 or 7 days before I get to the hour limit.

I was hoping I could save the file at the end of the day and then next day continue recording on the same
file .... but somehow I suppose I'm going to have to make separate recordings, then paste them all together
after 7 days or so !

Yes you can do that (sort of) using "Append Record".

I say "sort of" because an Audacity Project is not "a file". An Audacity project is made up of lots of little bits of audio data that are organised and arranged according to the instructions in the Audacity project file (the .AUP file). The important distinction here is that the .AUP file does not contain audio. This requires special consideration when using a project over several days - if Audacity can't find the audio data to go with the AUP file, then the project (recording) can be totally destroyed.
