better sound quality

I have version 1.3 beta and have windows 7.

I am trying to transfer old Vinyl records from a mono record player to my laptop. I would like to improve the quality of sound before i burn to disc but cannot find anything on audacity or windows media to do this. I must stress , i am not very technology minded so if any you have any suggestions, please make them simple.
