Recording noise

Help! When I record from a cassette tape using my Audacity TAPE2USB II that's hooked up to my computor (using USB), I'm piking up background noises. I turned off the microphone button on the unit but I'm still piking up background noise. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

When you play a tape, do you get any of that?

My guess is that you are recording from your laptop microphone but without a detailed description of what equipment, what operating system, how it's all connected up and what settings you it's impossible to say with any certainty.
