Recording in stereo

Problem: While recording, I get volume on the left side but hardly any on the right...and it plays back out of only one speaker.

What I want: Is to be able to record in stereo.

I am using 1.034 Beta on Windows.

I am pluggin my microphone (Shure KSM27) directly into the back of my computer (yes I'm using phantom power).
I know the problem is in the set up but I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. To get around this problem for now I am imputing my mic into my Edirol R-09 MPS recorder and then coming out of this unit (out of the headphone jack) and into the back of my computer (into the line in). Doing it this way gives me even levels on both left and right sides during recording on Audacity but I am also picking up a slight hiss. I would rather by pass the R-09 and go directly into the back of my computer. Please give me step by step instructions on how to record in stereo.

Audacity OOTB default is set to record in mono. To change to stereo, go to Edit > Preferences > Audio I/O and from the Channels drop-down box select 2(Stereo).

And you may need to close Audacity and restart it for the setting to take effect.

I did everything you suggested but I still only get a level on the left side.....I even recorded (just to make sure) and volume came out of the left speaker only...........so, are their any more preferences I need to check ? Is this an anomally ? Do I need to deleate the current Audacity and start again ? Please advise. Thanks.

I've been through the instruction for this microphone and they fail to address several important issues. This microphone has a three pin XLR Male connector on the cable right?

How are you plugging this into your computer? Unless you went through extraordinary expensive efforts, your computer is looking for a 1/8" or 3.5mm connector like this.

Please note that the microphone connector (second illustration) only has one audio channel and something inside the machine has to "make" two channels out of that. The Line-In connection is stereo right out of the box, but doesn't have battery.

About that battery. The voltage coming out of the computer is 5 volts. Phantom Power for the microphone is probably 48 volts. Which brings us back to where are you getting the phantom power from?

The back of my computer (Gateway) mike imput has a female 1/8 connector, so I simply bought a reducer which I plug my mic cord into.....but I think you may have identified my problem....the mic cord I'm using is something I purchased at Radio Shack several months ago for a Dynamic microphone....so if I'm understanding you correctly, there is a monoral connector at the end of the mic cord and not stereo ...Correct? By the way I'm coming out of my Shure KSM27 Studio Condenser mic and going directly in to a Sterling Audio PHP1Phantom Power Supply, then coming out of that with the previous mentioned mic cord, into the 1/8 adapter then into the back of the mic in on my computer.
So having said all of this...are my options to either purchase a stereo mic cord or a stereo adapter?

I don't mean to hijack this thread. But I'm having problems too. I'm just starting to use Audacity and was recording in stereo. Now all of a sudden I only get it out of one speaker and can't for the life of me figure out what's wrong. My preferences are set to "stereo." And I'm ready to throw my laptop out the window!! An ideas? I had it working, now it's not.
