I have recorded with audacity for years now, and I cant remeber if it did it before I used this laptop, so it may be a hardware issue, but everything I record is offset about +6 db. I know I can normalize it, but I was wondering why it does that. When I record from wave out, it is fine, but from a mic, its always like that. I have used many different mics, even one I hand built, but it had the same result. Any one know anything about that?

It's a hardware issue with the Mic in port. The only way to fix it at the source is to buy new hardware. You can also use the Normalize effect in Audacity to remove any DC offsets.
