Stereo tracks keep splitting when recording

When Im recording, I have previous tracks playing so I know where I am, but sometimes either the left or right of that previous track stops for a second and the two sides play at different times. Ive tried zooming way out, I turned autoscroll off and it still happens. Should I just record in mono and switch to stereo later?

No, you should find out why your computer is too slow to deal with recording and playing at the same time. How much hard drive space do you have and when was the last time you defragmented?
