No playback from Recording??? Help???

My best friend and I have a music group and we are using Audacity.
The problem is that I can record my voice into the microphone and hear it play back. Once we load our beat for the song into the program, it plays. Once we hit the record button so we can record our song, neither the audio from the beat nor our voices can be heard. Once we hit the record button, we can't hear anything.
What do we do? Please help us. Thank you.
