You don't have to go nuts with the headphones, either. As a first pass, I bought a set of Sony MDR-V150. I think they were $30 at the Borders Bookstore on Maui. They're claim to fame is not that they're particularly accurate, they're just OK, but I can stand to listen to them for a very long time without my ears falling off. I have much more expensive headphones that can't make that claim.

I also have a set of old Sennheiser headphones that do very well, although that model had weak bass, so not good in this case. I can use those for six hours straight.
