any word about when the next version of audacity will be out?

The developers are hoping to get it out later this year - it is unlikely to be sooner than early-mid November.
In the meantime the latest Betas are fairly stable now - I use 1.3.9 all the time now.

The very latest (hot off the press) alpha version is also available. Currently this is at 1.3.10 alpha. It contains a couple of bug fixes on top of 1.3.9 and I've not spotted any new bugs (which is the risk in trying an alpha version)
