My fake metronome goes from 40 to 210, so that's a grand start.
As we go.

I experimented with tempos above 300 bpm, but in practice it becomes meaningless - you start hearing the first beat as "the beat" and the other beats as "divisions of the beat".
"1234123412341234" played very fast sounds like:
"1....2...3...4..."
and playing notes between the strong beats is a matter of playing the subdivisions evenly within the strong beats. So for practical "metronome" (or "click track") purposes, 30 to 300 bpm seems like a good, generous range.

if there are one or two users that for some reason really need an even faster bpm, Change Speed may be used on the track, but there's no way that I can see higher bpm as a useful mainstream feature.

I know your developer's membership card requires you to be completely impractical at both ends of a variable. Wouldn't want to imperil your membership.

Hello, and welcome to Audacity 2.1.2.

How do I get the new generator to appear? It appears on the New Plugin list and I selected it for addition and nada, zippo (attached).

Same thing happens when I select all for addition. That used to be my go-to selection on the earlier machines under OS-X 10.9.5. This one is actually up to date 10.11.3.

  1. Generate, Effect or Analyze menu > Add / Remove Plug-ins
  2. Click the "New" button (near the top right)
  3. Scroll down and find "Metronome Track" and select it
  4. Click the "Enable" button.
  5. Click the OK button.

Thanks to feedback from koz, I've updated the sound of metronome-track.ny (in this post: viewtopic.php?p=300807#p300807)
