Cannot record streaming on Ubuntu 11.10
Hi
Got a new PC. installed Oneiric (11.10). Installed Audacity thru the software center tool. It's version 1.3.13-beta. I'm not able to record anything.
I have a bewildering choice in recording device (Edit/preferences/device/recording). I tried various settings one after the other since i'm not sure what I needed.
Everytime when I click record to record some streaming audio the line stays pretty much flat and nothing gets recorded.
I'd appreciate help on deciding which option I should use.
I've also added screens from sound settings which might be of assistance.
Thank you so much.

Re: Cannot record streaming on Ubuntu 11.10
What application are you trying to record from?
Was that application running (playing) when you made those screenshots?
What options do you have in the hardware input tab on sound settings (third image) in the "connector" settings?

Re: Cannot record streaming on Ubuntu 11.10
There are instructions for Ubuntu 10.x here: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Stere ... _Ubuntu_10
I'm not sure if they can be adapted for Ubuntu 11.x as I don't have that version installed.

Just tried those instructions with Ubuntu 12.04 alpha and with some minor differences the instructions work.steve wrote:I'm not sure if they can be adapted for Ubuntu 11.x as I don't have that version installed.

No, I was trying to record from an Indian music site, it was not playing when I made those screen shots. I've attached the file.steve wrote:What application are you trying to record from?

Re: Cannot record streaming on Ubuntu 11.10
Sorry, I'm too stupid to follow those instructions, they are way too complex for me. Thanks for pointing me to them anyway. I have a WIndows XP virtual machine in this Linux box and I will use that for recording streaming audio.steve wrote:There are instructions for Ubuntu 10.x here: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Stere ... _Ubuntu_10

Re: Cannot record streaming on Ubuntu 11.10
The most important part is that you install "PulseAudio Volume Control" (also called "pavucontrol").sumithar wrote:Sorry, I'm too stupid to follow those instructions, they are way too complex for me.
If you install that then the instructions will probably make sense - the instructions are pretty detailed (perhaps too much detail) but with pavucontrol installed you may be able to go through them slowly step-by-step. If you get it working once you should find it quite quick and easy the next time. The main problem is that Ubuntu does not install pavucontrol by default.

Re: Cannot record streaming on Ubuntu 11.10
Once I figured out that Pulse Audio Control is its own app that can be invoked from Unity, things became better. I couldn't tell you the exact sequence of what I did but I finally got Audacity to start working.
Thanks for your patience and working with me.
