Audacity 1.3.14 in Wine on Debian Squeeze

Post by steve » Wed Dec 28, 2011 12:07 am

method for installing Audacity 1.3.14 on Debian Squeeze.

Packages installed from Squeeze repository:
wine 1.01-3.1
wine-bin 1.01-3.1
wine-utils 1.01-3.1
libwine-alsa 1.01-3.1

Add the repository for PlayOnLinux with the following commands:

Code: Select all

wget -q "http://deb.playonlinux.com/public.gpg" -O- | sudo apt-key add -
sudo wget http://deb.playonlinux.com/playonlinux_squeeze.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/playonlinux.list
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install playonlinux
(see here for more information: http://www.playonlinux.com/en/download.html

Download Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7: Audacity 1.3.14 installer (.exe file, 18.4 MB) from http://audacityteam.org/download/beta_windows

Launch PlayOnLinux
After following first run (on screen) instructions, select "Install" from the main menu:
PlayOnLinux.png
PlayOnLinux.png (16.55 KiB) Viewed 5007 times
On the next screen select "Install a non-listed program"

Select the Audacity Installer file and follow the on-screen instructions to "Install to a new virtual drive".
When the following instruction appears: "What would you like to do before installation?" select "Install some libraries"
install-libraries.png
install-libraries.png (29.81 KiB) Viewed 5007 times
On the next screen select:
POL_Install_msvc90
and
POL_Install_vcrun2008

When prompted for the installer to run, select the Audacity Installer executable and follow the on-screen instructions.
Ignore the error messages at the end of the installation.

When prompted, make a shortcut to audacity.exe (this makes a Desktop shortcut).

When all of this is complete there will (hopefully) be a working Audacity 1.3.14 for Windows installed.

Why bother with all of this?
The Windows version of Audacity supports VST plug-ins.
To install VST plug-ins, place the VST .dll file(s) into the Audacity (Windows) installation directory, for example:
/home/<username>/.PlayOnLinux/wineprefix/Audacity_disk/drive_c/Program Files/Audacity 1.3 Beta (Unicode)/Plug-Ins

Plug-ins tested and working so far with this set-up:
Kjaerhus Audio Classic Series (Note: the Kjaerhus Audio web site no longer exists, but the plug-ins can still be found on free software download sites - use Google, but as with all downloads, take care to only download files that you trust.

Thanks, Steve. That PlayOnLinux home page seems pretty misleading to me. Maybe this is more accurate:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayOnLinux

in other words, PlayOnLinux isn't just "based on" Wine, but depends on it?

Still, it sounds a good idea.

It' a little more than that as PlayOnLinux appear to support multiple versions of Wine.
This is the first time that I've used PlayOnLinux so I'm not familiar with all of its intricacies. I posted these "steps to install" because a "standard install" of Audacity in Wine on Debian Squeeze does not run.

The notes so far are not full in detail but are hopefully sufficiently complete to reproduce on other systems.
Have you tried installing 1.3.14 (Windows) in Ubuntu? IIRC when I had Ubuntu I had no problem installing Audacity 1.2.6 but 1.3.x did not run. I did not try installing with PlayOnLinux.

On Ubtuntu 10.10, 1.3.13 (Unicode) for Windows runs fine with the WINE available in Synaptic. 1.3.14 installs but gives the R6034 error when run, unless you exchange its newer Microsoft.VC90.CRT.manifest for the older one in 1.3.13.

The older playonlinux version in Synaptic doesn't seem to have the "manual installation" option (or I cannot see it because the app window has not been designed for people on 800x600). I tried to install the latest version using the command-line instructions on the app's web site, but got "resources unavailable". I then installed the deb of the latest version using Ubuntu Software Centre. I was JUST able to reach off the bottom of the screen to the link in the app for manual install, having seen it in the online documentation. I could not actually see it on my monitor. After that, all went smoothly and 1.3.14 runs.

Both 1.3.13 and 1.3.14 handled the few VST plug-ins I tried OK.

So I think a mention of playonlinux on http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Linux ... s_on_Linux maybe with a link to here would be good.

Thanks,

Gale
