Topic moved to the Audacity 1.3.x part of the forum (the Maverick distro version of Audacity is 1.3.12).
My first guess is that it's a video driver problem, but on the other hand you're the first person to write into the forum with a locale that uses Right to Left layout.
Do you know any other Audacity users that have the same (Hebrew) locale?

Nope. Then again, I do not know any Maverick users...
If it's a driver problem it's a dead end. Besides waiting for a driver update. The open-source drivers are inferior.
However, it has to be smthng to do with Audacity and the way it's working with the display. I am using Maverick for a month or so, and so far I didn't see anything that resembles this.

If you could run it in english it could help figuring out if it's a problem with the interface's language or not...
If you press Ctrl-P will it open the preferences dialog? If so, can you read/edit anything there? If so, can you change the language to english and see if it works?
Other alternative (probably better in this case) is to edit the config file directly...
Config file is located in ~/.audacity-data/audacity.cfg
Close audacity and edit that file. Look for an entry like this:
Change it to:
Open Audacity. The interface language should be english now. Does it look normal?

Still blank, though the menu changed to English.
I've worked around the problem by using ReZound (it has the ugliest interface possible, but it works great).

I've put an enquiry in to Audacity QA to see if there's any ideas about this.

Thanks. Much appreciated - ReZound interface graphics is stuff for nightmares...

I forgot to ask... Are all packages up-to-date?

There are several reports of this:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/734023
Audacity isn't empty (nor is the project rate box on the right as in your image) when I run it in Hebrew in an English installation of Ubuntu. So I don't think this is testable unless someone installs Ubuntu in Hebrew.
I would suspect a driver issue when using a wxWidgets application. Are you using an ATI video card? If so, it may even be
this issue or something similar.
I would suggest installing
other applications that are built with wxWidgets and seeing if they are corrupted, If so, please let us know. Then report the issue to wxWidgets and to your video card manufacturer.
