Probably 1.3.7 doesn't have yet the new preferences tab scheme. It's recommended that you try to upgrade to 1.3.12.

Try upgrading to slackware 13.1 if you can.

I'm not familiar with slackware so I can't give you much advice on it's package management system (which from what I could find might be a bit too basic and more tailored the power user). In my opinion slackware is not a recommended distro for new linux users...

Do you have slackpkg installed?

This article (a bit outdated) talks about package management on slackware: http://www.linux.com/archive/feed/60326

BTW, may I ask why you chose slackware over the other linux distros?

For new users I'd recommend another distro with a better (and more friendly) package management system, such as Debian or Ubuntu.

Do you have alsamixer installed? If so (should be installed by default in most systems), try running alsamixer in the command line. In alsamixer press F4 to switch to capture mode, use the cursor to select the item you want to capture sound from (I believe in your case would be 'line-in'), press spacebar to select it as the recording source (you should now see 'CAPTURE' in red at bottom, over 'Line-in'). Try to record again and see if you get any sound.

In recording devices, in audacity's preferences, do you have any options that has the words 'Line-in' in it?
Include as much details as you can in your post (Audacity version, Operating System, Equipment used, etc).
Please post your question in the appropriate forum (regarding audacity version and operating system).
