Ubuntu and many other linux distributions have their own software repositoires packed in an easily installable package through their package management system.
On Ubuntu you have Ubuntu Software Center: http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/features#apps
If you're new to linux and ubuntu I'd recommend some reading first. On ubuntu's website you'll find some tours and tutorials.
