I'm running Audacity 1.3.4 Beta under Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron), and I have an annoying problem. When I record a track, and then play back part of it (to aid in editing the track before saving it), the playback works fine, and I can stop the playback when desired, but Audacity then enters a state of limbo, where most menu options (including re-starting playback) are unavailable because Audacity still thinks it's doing a playback. The stop button, while effective in stopping the playback, cannot get Audacity out of this state.
I have not observed this problem on playback of a file stored on disc, so I have a workaround: I don't playback immediately after recording. Instead, I save the unedited track on disk, close it, and re-open the saved copy. This works, but it is annoying. Does anyone have suggestions for a better solution?

Re: Playback mode hangs after recording (Ubuntu 8.04)
The current build of Audacity for Ubuntu is rather flaky.
I've noticed similar problems occasionally, but if I just leave it a few moments it sorts itself out.
Try experimenting with the different sound systems (OSS, ALSA and JACK) top see which works best on your machine.
Getting it to work with JACK can be a bit tricky, but there are some tips for how to do this if you look through some of the more recent Linux posts on this forum.
