only .6 seconds of record

Fresh install of Audacity 1.3.7 on Ubuntu 9.04 won't record from line in for more than .6 seconds. Audacity has worked well in the past on a smaller hard drive but this is the first time I have tried recording on this larger hard drive. Everything starts out OK, like in the past, but then quits. The "cursor" keeps on moving across the screen until it reaches the right hand side, but the screen does not keep "scrolling" either.

"If you upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04 which has long-term support you can get Audacity 1.3.12 which is the current Beta version. "
Upgraded Ubuntu to 9.10 (that was as far as it would go) and Audacity is still 1.3.9. Now Audacity won't even monitor input now !
How can I get the newer versions?

If you can't install the latest ubuntu package you can always compile from source...
What host/devices have you selected on Preferences -> Device? Which ones do you have available? Are you using pulseaudio?

Problem Solved. The recommendation to upgrade to 10.10 was accomplished by erasing the drive, downloading 10.10 and burning it to disk (on my Windoze machine), and then installing it fresh. Then I was able to get version 1.3.12 of Audacity. Initally it wouldn't record, but by going to "Sound Preferences and changing the "input" from mic to line, everything works just fine! You learn something new every day with Linux! I guess sometimes software just doesn't play well together! THANKS, Bob
