Audacity 1.3.5 works well in Ubuntu 8.04 notwithstanding the 2 small bugs previously mentioned.

There has been a lot of postings about getting Audacity to work in 8.04.

I had numerous problems including not being unable to reord or plaback. I found the answer on my machine (Dual intel with ICH9 onboard sound) to be to delete all Jack files.

In synaptic use search to find what Jack files are on your computer, then delete them.

If you need to use Jack then you are stuffed. Jack seems to be associated on 8.04 with Ardour.

But with all my Jack files remove Audacity performs as required without problems.

I've not found it necessary to uninstall JACK, just necessary to ensure that it is not running when I use Audacity. I guess if you do not need JACK for anything else, then removing it completely is a straightforward option.

So what version of Ubuntu are you on now?
I'm on Ubuntu 8.10 and Audacity can be installed through synaptic without JACK. Intrepid has Audacity 1.3.5, and in the absence of JACK it seems to work fine.

I'm on 8.04 and did that with Audacity 1.3.4-beta

I too have noted some bugs in 1.3.5. If I add a fade, cut, or any sort of edit, then undo my work, the program immediately crashes. I can instigate this problem by doing two edits, then attempting to undo. Also, there is a terrible visual lag when selecting audio. If I click and drag the mouse cursor over a section of audio, there is a non-linear graphical representation of the audio being highlighted. It just appears very choppy. I don't recall having this problem in previous versions.

@Brendo613 - yes but 1.3.5 is now an old superseded version (two versions out of date). If you want to test bugs, you need to be on the latest vn. which is now 1.3.7 - and then report these to the developers.

This page from the Wiki http://audacityteam.org/contact/ tells you where to post bug reports for the developers (see the section titled "Suggestions and Comments for the Audacity Developers").

Some of the developers do call by the forum here from time to time - but mostly thay hang out in the Wiki.

I see, thanks, but no luck upgrading. I'm using Ubuntu 8.10 right now, and can't upgrade Audacity to 1.3.7 because of a required newer version libasound-2 dependency, which will conflict with my current ALSA installation.

I'm using Ubuntu 8.10 and Audacity 1.3.8 alpha, so I can assure you that upgrading Audacity is possible.
When building from source, getting all of the dependencies sorted out is a bit of a pain, but once that is done upgrading is very straightforward.
