delete does not work ... sometimes

Hi,

using audacity 1.3.12 beta on ubuntu linux 10.04, I have troube deleting part of an mp3 file that I imported (also tried importing a wav). Initially it works,
but then I zoom in, and mark about 2 minutes, and it does not work any more. Or it does once, but then I can't do any undo, nor
can I delete any further. Neither the delete key nor ctrl. K work.

It looks like a bug, though I can not give a recipe on how to reproduce it, it just eventually happens ... not very helpfull, I know.
So I was wondering wether there is a known workaround or a way for me to get things done. It looks like other people have the
same problem: http://www.andybrain.com/qna/2007/10/17 ... -audacity/

cheers,

Can you perform any other edits such as Edit > Split New or Effect > Amplify on that region when it happens or are all the menus frozen? Are you editing at the end of the project when this happens? If so and this is a saved project, does quitting Audacity then setting h to "0.0000000000" in the .aup file help?

All items from the "Edit" menue are greyed out when it happens, so guess thats frozen. Bevor I run into that "not able to delete" problem, all the Edit options are available.

No. Its a 5 minute song, and I have marked a region form about 2minutes to 4 minutes.
Oh, and by the way, sometimes I can mark and delete that area, if I am not too detailed about the excat start and end point. If I do that, but then try to correkt the endpoints (its a piece of music, so the cut should be precise ...), no more edits possible. If I try to make my first cut correct by zooming in, I can not delete.

Have you got Audio Cache enabled in the Directories preferences?

If not, it would be best to get the audacity-dbg package from System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager, start Audacity from a terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal) then provide a backtrace.

It has happened to me a few times in the past (I'm not sure which audacity version I had then, nor if it was on mac on linux) that sometimes shortcut keys for undo (Ctrl-Z) wouldn't work (nothing happened when I pressed it), but if I used the mouse to click undo in the edit menu it would work. After using the mouse the shortcut key would start to work again normally...

I don't know if this could be related to the problem reported here in any way. I didn't care much about it then because it only happened a very few times and the workaround was easy...

Just to ask the obvious, are you also sure the track is stopped - you are not playing, recording or paused?
