generate low frequency tones smoothly

Post by bobdot » Mon Jul 19, 2010 7:41 pm

How can I generate low frequency tones smoothly? For example 7.83Hz, without making it sound like a pneumatic drill? Thanks for your help!

dont understand the real problem

low tones should be very smooth
they get a lot more samples to help recreate it
than the much higher freqs do

how are you creating it ?????
why does it sound like a pneumatic drill ? or why do you think it does?

how are you listening to it ??
could it be your playback and not the source that is a problem?

I've deleted to duplicate topic as I presume that it was posted in error.

7.83 Hz should not sound like anything - it is below the threshold of human hearing. If you are playing a 7.83 Hz signal loudly you may be hearing the sound of the speaker banging against the end stops (which it does not usually do for long before the speaker is destroyed).

Behold some of the problems of having Audacity do useful work outside the range of audio. At seven cycles, you should be able to see your speakers walk across the table or the grill cloth slapping against the cabinet. One of the earthquake waves -- Alpha, I think -- is around 7 Hz.

You can go the other direction, too. Audacity will generate tones so high they will fry your speakers and drill holes in your cat -- but you can't hear them.

Neither of them will qualify as "audio" any time soon.

Why do you need a "tone" that low and how are you listening to it?

There is a joke that all Hollywood earthquakes only have A waves because you can clearly see the wine glass walking across the table with the wine splashing everywhere, but you can't photograph a room moving at a 1Hz rate.

sounds like visual foley

most of that stuff is fake

cars dont explode
they burn violently

cars dont bump a car and then flip over it
there is a ramp hidden behind the car to make that happen

dont know why
but hollywood keeps making things more and more unrealistic
maybe cause the public is stupid enough to believe it

and how do two people running from a burning car know
exactly when it is going to explode (assuming that cars did)
and yell its going to blow up and jump towards the camera
onto the soft mats that are out of view just as it blows
i suspect the jumper has a button in his hand
to time it so perfectly
