i have Audacity 1.3.7 for Linux (I'm using Ubuntu, if it matters).
I've been trying to capture audio with this program. My attempts have been failing miserably. No matter what input or recording settings I adjust, it only records from the internal microphone, not the sound card itself, which means it sounds like crap. What can I do about this?
Audacity doesn't record from the sound card - only from mic

Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.x.x package for your distribution or compile Audacity from the source code.

tell us the pc and type - laptops can be a problem
tell us the sound card it uses and the settings you have selected
do you actually have a line in port or is there just one little connector?
you may need an external sound card to do what you want to to .
give us details about what you have and how its all connnected.

If you have it installed, open the Gnome Volume Control and go to the "Options" tab.
The "switches" for which input is used should be there.
If you do not have the Gnome Volume Control installed, you should be able to do the same thing using AlsaMixer.
Open a Terminal window and type: (that's a zero at the end).
Use the Tab key to move to the "Capture" settings.
Right/Left cursor to move from one control to the next.
Spacebar to select/de-select a control.
