Can only record from microphone. (Solved!)

Post by newyorkpaulie » Thu Apr 29, 2010 8:33 pm

I have a choice named" Wave Out Mix" when I run Audacity using WindowsXP PRO, but using Linux Mint 8 (my preferred OS) I can only get waveform signals when I use the microphone (mic:0) setting. Is this the only way the program can be used with Linux? Using the microphone is not as desirable due to picking up background sounds for one. Any ideas or help? Thanks.

I don't know a lot about Mint, but I gather it is 'buntu based and I use Ubuntu.
In Ubuntu, the sound system is controlled by PulseAudio, so what you do is to leave Audacity set to;
Host: Alsa
Device(s): default
then, if you have more than one sound card you use "Pulse Volume Control" to set the record/playback devices (sound cards).
The actual inputs/outputs are set using the normal (Gnome) volume control.

I left the host setting at Alsa and changed both recording & playback device to Pulse. Bingo!
Thanks for your help.
I've since gone back and tweaked further and these settings seem to be the optimum:
Input choice: Mix:0
Devices: Host ALSA
Playback: pulse
Recording: Intel 82801CA-ICH3: Intel 82801CA-ICH3 (hw:0,0)
