Audacity-1.3.2 beta
By turning off ESD I was able to record and play back tracks. But, when I try to overdub, I still haven't found any settings that allow me to use the mic and still hear the previously-recorded tracks. None of the other threads on this problem seem to be relevant (I read them all). I have seen the following symptoms: When I have the preferences set to OSS: /dev/dsp for both input and output I can record one track just fine; hitting record subsequently pops up a new, blank track, but never starts recording. Setting my i/o devices to ALSA gives me the infamous "Error while opening sound device ..." message.
Except, of course, when it doesn't. Right now I can't record anything -- audacity pops up a new track image, but there's only a short segment of silence. This has happened before, and seems solved by a reboot (But This is Linux!).
Anyway, I've tried all the combinations I can think of, and still can't get playback while recording. Any suggestions?

Re: Play Other Tracks While Recording fails in FC 7 with OSS
Audacity 1.3.2 was released in October 2006, two and a half years ago. It is therefore very out of date and likely to have large numbers of unfixed bugs in it. If the same problem still exists with the current beta release, then it might be more interesting.
