FFmpeg Library

Hi ! My name is Paco and I live in Austria. This is my first topic so before anything, I would like to greet all members of this forum so, HI EVERYBODY!!
Now:
I wanted to import an ac3 audio file and convert it into a MP3 file and it seems to be possible if the libavformat.so.52 library is installed. Audacity doesn't detect it because it asks for the avformat-52.dll library, which is a Windows type of file. How can this happen if I'm using Audacity for Linux on Ubuntu (8.04)?
Thanks in advance for your eventual answers.
