Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

Will not pause in recording

Post by bredikin » Fri May 01, 2009 12:08 am

Several months ago I copied some old vinyls to Audacity then to iTunes. During recording I used the "Pause" button whenever I had to turn the record over. It worked well. Now I want to record my voice using the built in mic of my iMac. I can record alright but I cannot pause the recording. I can only stop it. I searched the Audacity Forum did not find anything for the Mac but did find that same problem reported in the Windows section. I tried the solutions recommended there but they did not work. Please help.

I have tried both Audacity 1.3.6 and 1.3.7.1. My OS is Leopard (10.5)

I'll have to try that when I get home.

Latest 1.3.7, Leopard OS-X 10.5. Recording from the Line-In on an Intel Mac Mini with a Shure sound mixer and built-in slate microphone.

Mine pauses recording, but it doesn't stop the bouncing sound meter. Do you actually get the timeline cursor continuing to move during Pause?

If so, you may have scrambled preferences. Do you remember all the things you changed to customize Audacity? Trash the configuration file ... /User/koz/Library/Application Support/audacity/audacity.cfg.

Don't Empty the Trash just yet.

Restart Audacity and it should ask you "English?" when it wakes up. That's your clue that you have "reinstalled" Audacity. Don't customize anything. See if the Record Pause works.

Do you remember what the keyboard shortcuts are for Pause? Is that what you used, or did you click on the Pause button?

If it didn't work, you can put the original .cfg file back. That should restore your original preferences when you restart Audacity.

Hi Koz,
Thanks for your prompt reply. Trashing the file audacity.cfg and restarting Audacity did the trick. It now pauses.

In answer to your questions: before fixing the problem it actually did not pause, the time line cursor continued to move. I had tried both the blue double bar button and the keyboard shortcut "P". When I restarted Audacity it did not ask "English" it just opened and the "Welcome Message" window was superimposed on the Audacity control window.
