Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

batch conversion

Post by StudioM5 » Sat Apr 04, 2009 9:50 am

This is an option that I miss in Audacity 1.2.5,
I have to create many small files - hundreds (mono voice over) for multimedia productions.
It would be nice to do some conversion, normalizing etc. for batches.
Maybe a feature for the future?

Why are you using Audacity 1.2.5? This option is available in Audacity 1.3.7

Hi

I'm now using 1.3.7. I have a similar task, I'd need to resample hundreds of files from 44,100HZ to 11,025Hz.

How can I achieve this batch job in Audacity? I still haven't figured it out.

Audacity is not really the right tool for the job.
There are loads of batch format conversion programs that will do the job on Linux or Windows so I guess there's something for Macs - Can iTunes do it?

Hi Steve

Thanks, in fact just minutes ago I realized I can do the job with Switch.

Then again, my problem changed - I would also need to convert the files from 16-bit PCM to 8-bit. Apparently Audacity can't do this. Does it even support 8-bit files?

In Audacity 1.3.7 select "Export > Other Uncompressed Formats" and in the "Options" select 8bit WAV.

Audacity can import 8bit WAV files, but upsamples them to the project default on import (16, 24 or 32bit). Processing 8 bit files directly would result in very bad quality sound.

Steve

That is true what you say about the quality, but the reason why I need files downconverted is that the software that plays these files can only support 8-bit.
