Working with avi files

Wondering what the work flow is to work on the audio of an avi file. I just did a File>Open on an avi file and got the sound track to audacity, what do I need to do to get back with the video - is it back to ffmpeg and muxing it together?

Thank you

Edit: Off topic - but how do I get sound out through my headphones. Using Mac OS 10.5.6 and have sound out to the headphones in system prefs and no sound out to headhones using Audacity - sound is still through internal speakers.

I think QuickTime Pro can do all those tricks. QTP will let you do simple split editing and will export in any format QuickTime Supports.

<<<sound out through my headphones.>>>

Audacity > Preferences > Audio I/O > Output

Yeah - don't have QTPro - need to figure out how to do this with ffmpeg. I've tried straight File>Open and File>Import, doesn't seem to make any difference .... I still have a stand alone audio file when done. Maybe I'll post in ffmpeg forums or VideoHelp.com, they're the ones that helped me find audacity to begin with.

Not sure of the deal re the headphones - the I/O option is there now - wasn't earlier - thank you.
