Envelope tool weirdness

Hi,

I'm using version 1.3.3 on the Mac. First time using Audacity - creating a soundtrack for a slide show. Envelope tool is driving me crazy! Here is what is going on.

I want to create a gradual fade out for a song clip - fading gradually from 33.5 seconds (full volume) to 35.0 seconds (volume down to zero). I put an envelope click point at 33.5 seconds - no problem. Then I click on the timeline at 35.0 seconds to create a second envelope click point, and (here is where the problem starts) a third envelope click point spontaneously appears at 34.0 seconds. When I grab the click point at 35.0 seconds and drag the volume down, there is not a smooth fade out from 33.5 to 35.0 seconds. Rather, there is an abrupt fade out from 33.5 to 34.0, and flat volume line from 34.0 to 35.0

I tried grabbing the evil click point and dragging it off the track, but it keeps reappearing. I tried moving it. It will move to the left (towards the start of the track), but it will not move to the right of 34.0 seconds.

I tried multiple UNDOs. I tried quitting the project without saving changes then opening the project again. Nothing will make that evil phantom click point go away. HELP!

I agree it can be quite tricky.

You may find it easier if you change the track view to "Waveform dB"
Click on the little arrow next to the track name and select that option from the drop down menu.

The other option is to use the "Fade out" effect from the Effects menu.

I have posted a "feature request" that this feature could do with getting some attention from the developer. See my post here and add your vote of support if you agree (and any other comments/ideas) http://audacityteam.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=7819
