Bug in .aiff export

I have found a bug when creating .aiff export files. When I export to .aiff so I can import the tracks into iTunes, I find that the import into iTunes does not occur.

This is a new issue that has cropped up in version 1.3.6. It was not present in version 1.3.5. I performed the same sequence in version 1.3.5 without issue.

When I ran the export again, I noticed the export dialogue box notifying me the export was occurring as a .wav format. As an experiment, I changed the extension of the .aiff file that was exported to a .wav. When this was done, the import into iTunes, occurred immediately.

I believe that the selection of .aiff as an export choice, picks the .wav format option, but the extension given the file is .aiff.

Has anyone else seen the issue?

No and I can't replicate it, either. I exported a short sound clip as AIFF and it slid right into iTunes and played just fine.

If you open each file in QuickTime Player and press Apple-I, an INFO panel will pop up and tell you stuff. WAV files are Little Endian. AIFF files are Big Endian. Do yours follow that rule?

Can you replicate the problem by downloading piano2.wav from here...

http://www.kozco.com/tech/soundtests.html

...and export it to AIFF from an Audacity timeline? It's six seconds long. It's my one and only published piano performance.

Not yet.

I downloaded your piano file and performed the export. I experienced the same problem. When I looked at the file type using quicktime, both the .wav and the .aiff were formatted as Little Endian. That is why the import into iTunes for me did not work.

Is there a separate library that I may have wrong?

Thank you,
Charlie

I am currently running 10.4.11. I guess I should have had that within the previous post. The version of iTunes I am running is 8.02.

This is a known problem, but only in Export Multiple with the "Other Uncompressed files" filter, which gives you 16-bit WAV irrespective of what you ask for. Can you confirm the precise menus and dropdowns being used please?

Thanks

I am experiencing the same issue. With Export Multiple, If I use the AIFF 16-bit filter on the first menu, I get .aiff files that cannot be used by iTunes. If I use the "Other Uncompressed files" selection on the menu, and choose AIFF (Apple/ SGI) 16-bit filter, I get .wav files that can be used by iTunes, but I first convert them to .aiff files (which I do with the freeware MAX application). iTunes cannot associate album art with .wav files, and the .aiff files converted by MAX work fine. This is with latest Mac software (OSX 10.5.5) and May 2008 Macbook Pro.

Thanks. As the WAV files produced with the "Other Uncompressed Files" filter are genuine WAVs, iTunes itself could convert them to AIFF

# Open iTunes Preferences (under Edit on Windows or under iTunes on OS X)
# Click on the Advanced tab
# Click the small Importing tab inside the Advanced tab
# In the "Import Using" dropdown, choose "AIFF Encoder"
# Click OK
# Right-click or control-click over the WAV file in iTunes > "Convert Selection to AIFF"

Gale,

Thank you for the feedback. I was using Export Multiple, with the tracks being selected according to the labels. You are right, I was getting 16-bit .wav files. Do you have the plan to fix this on the next release?

<<<Do you have the plan to fix this on the next release?>>>

I don't think Gale Andrews personally has any plans to fix it, no.

And I can tell you that Export Multiple under Highly Experimental 1.3.7 doesn't work at all.

So it's different.
