Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

10.5.5 sound input optionless

Post by pjh360 » Wed Nov 05, 2008 8:29 am

Trying to record streaming audio and there is no 'line in' option with OS 10.5 on my macbook air. The only choice is under audacity is internal microphone. This would not be so bad if it did not pick up keystroke sounds as well. Mac Applications/utilities/audio MIDI does not yield any different answers. Mac/Pref/sound only same option as well. Am I out of luck?

Everybody I know with an Air is busy adding things to it to make it into a working computer instead of a fashion accessory.

Macs as a rule will not record from a playback like PCs will--or used to (Vista stopped doing that). I use WireTap to do this on my PowerBook. I bet you can, too. That's the well behaved tool that can capture to a file from your output bus. There used to be a free, early version from VersionTracker if you don't need the scheduler.

Then there is SoundFlower which is a free download from the Apple web site. That's a not well behaved program that can be forced to do a lot of the same jobs. The joke is that SoundFlower makes your Mac sound system as unstable as PCs are all the time.
