Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

Edit metadata dialog

Post by Paul Lundgren » Sat Oct 11, 2008 3:56 am

Using 1.3.5 I have been adding generic tracks using the Edit Labels dialog. When I go to Export Multiple, the Edit metadata dialog pops up asking me to enter data for each track. Is there a way to by pass this dialog? In this case I don't need any metadata but now I have to click through every track before I can export.

Yes, go to Edit > Preference > Import/Export and uncheck the box that says Show Metadata Editor prior to export step

Thanks much. I did look for such a preference - just missed it.

Relatedly--

In my previous version of Audacity, in export multiple, I was prompted to enter metadata info that would then be used for all the tracks (like album name, artist name, date...). This made sense. NOW, one must re-enter the same info over and over for each track. If you go and create a template with such info, then when you import it, the cells for track no. and track title of course will be blank and you have to manually enter THAT part.

I can't figure out a reasonable way to do it. Am I missing something? There needs to be at least an OPTION to do it the old way. Or a way to copy-paste the desired cells to be re-used for each track.

You can of course edit the metadat after export - you can do this in iTunes for example.

I am not a MAC user, but in Windows we can use Windows Explorer to edit the metadata of exported music files - we can select a whole bunch and set common Properties for all - I am guessing that in MAC-land there is similar functionality somehow ....

Tommy, the trick is to add the tags common to all tracks at File > Open Metadata Editor (loading a template works too) *before* the export step. Then if you have Metadata Editor turned off in Preferences, you will get your common tags in all the exported files, and the Title and Track Number will be added silently. See:
http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php? ... 3#ID3_Tags

I guess most people on Mac would edit tags in iTunes. That is the built-in media program on Mac, but is also available for Windows. Finder (the Mac equivalent file manager) is I think quite limited as regards tag viewing/editing.

Gale
Gale - this is a very helpful note regarding "Export Multiple." It would be helpful if the reference to the Metadata Editor was made in the documentation underneath the "Export Multiple" section. Using the "Save as Default" while doing an export doesn't have the same effect and is confusing.

Thanks. Can you explain a little more clearly what you mean? Which specific documentation? I agree documentation about export multiple (as well as about export) should refer to Metadata Editor, however we have a possible fix we are experimenting with so that if you have ticked a checkbox in the Metadata Editor, common tags entered into it will be propagated to all the files. So you would not then need the unintuitive step of setting the tags before export unless you really wanted to hide the Metadata Editor completely at the export step.

Do we have a "Save as Default" button anywhere? Sorry I don't really understand. Doing exactly what doesn't have the same effect as exactly what?
