Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

Nudging audio with arrow keys?

Post by shedboyxx » Mon Jan 16, 2012 7:25 pm

First post!

OS 10.5.8/Audacity 1.3 FWIW

Hoping for a quick answer for this.

Trying to work with lining up audio in separate tracks. What's the tool or method for nudging audio clips within a track?

Looked around online as well as searched this forum and could not find the answer - although I may be using the wrong terms

TIA

Jim

Please quote the full version number in future posts (for example 1.3.14) the last number is often important.
Also, you posted in the Audacity 1.2.x section. I'll move it to the 1.3.x section.

I think what you are looking for is the "Time Shift Tool" http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Tool ... #timeshift

Right! Sorry about that...1.3.13 and I'll make sure to post in the right version number next time.

Actually the Time Shift Tool lets me drag the audio - but I'm looking for minor adjustments. I can do this in Digital Performer but wanted to use Audacity for quick audio editing. A nudge feature for small increments would be helpful if available.

Audacity doesn't have this or any fairly quick workaround, but I can add your vote. You can nudge the cursor with left or right arrow and then use the Tracks > Align Tracks menu item to align the start or end of the track with the cursor.

I normally do that by zooming in first (Ctrl+Mouse Wheel), that way I can "nudge" the track along by as little as a single audio sample if I want to.

An alternative method:
To nudge a track a little to the left you can just delete a small amount from the start of the track.
To nudge a little to the right, insert a small amount of silence.
In either case it can be as little as a single audio sample.

Another method is to "nudge" the cursor to the required position, then align the track to the cursor.

Another method is to Select the audio that you want to move and "cut" it (Ctrl + X), then use the Selection Toolbar to position the cursor precisely where you want the audio to start (or just click on the track) and paste the audio back in (Ctrl + V)
(On Mac the shortcuts probably use the Command key rather than Ctrl)

Audacity does not have a "nudge key", but there are many ways to achieve the same result - my preferred method is to simply zoom in and use the Time Shift tool (F5 key to select the time shift tool. F1 key to switch back to the normal selection tool). Other users may prefer other methods.
