I have a Ion Profile LP USB turntable and am trying to digitise my old vinyl collection using Audacity 1.3.4 beta on an Intel iMac running 10.6.8. I've read all the Audacity help pages and user guides (and all the pages of this forum area) and am still unable to find a successful outcome to my problem. WHICH IS... the input levels are greyed out and unadjustable. There is no volume level adjustment on the turntable itself, in the Mac Preferences - Sound - Input, the input device is selected as USB Audio Codec, but where the input level is shown, it says " the selected device has no input controls". When I open the Audio Midi Setup application, selecting the USB Audio Codec input, the source is greyed out as are the level adjusters. I can see and hear the input audio in Audacity, but the levels are way higher than recommended and I have no way of adjusting them. Can somebody please help!!!
Thanks in anticipation.

Re: Recording levels unadjustable using Ion USB turntable
USB device input levels cannot be adjusted on Mac - it is an Apple "design" decision, like no direct recording of computer playback and no playthrough of the input.
Check there is no volume knob underneath the turntable.
If the Ion has RCA cables for connecting to speakers or to a HiFi, buy an RCA stereo to TRS 1/8 inch stereo adaptor. Plug the RCA cables into the adaptor and the adaptor into the Mac audio input. Set the phono/line switch on the Ion to Line. Then choose "Line In" as the input in Device Toolbar in Audacity 1.3.14 (which is the current Beta, not 1.3.4). Then you can adjust the input levels using the Audacity Mixer Toolbar.

Hi Gale,
many thanks for the info - I'll buy myself the phono to 3.5 mm jack converter and give it a try.
