I have a MacBook Pro running 10.5.8 and Audacity works fine recording my tape cassettes to the computer.
I am trying to get Audacity to run on a newly acquired MacBook running 10.6.8, but having problems. Install - no problem - but it will not record a cassette tape to the computer. The preferences settings are identical on both machines and the wave graphic area shows time lapse, but no sound waves.
What am I doing wrong?

Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.
Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

How are you connecting the tape deck to the MacBook? If you go to Apple menu > System Preferences, Sound, Input, what do you see?

Do one have one of those one-connector-fits-all things? Do you have two differnet connectors for Line-In and Headphone Out like this?

Hi Bill,
The tape deck is built into a Grace GDI - T2USB200 and this is connected to my Mac with A USB cable.
Under - Apple menu > System Preferences, Sound, Input - I see 3 options -1) Internal microphone - Built in, 2) Line in - Audio line-in port, and 3) USB Audio Controller - USB
Option 3 is selected

Hi Koz,
I have the same set up as your photo, but am not using them. My Grace TAPE2USBII is connected to my computer with a USB cable. That is supposed to be the only connection required for recording. I am not listening to the tape as it records to the computer.

OK, you've got the correct input selected in the Sound Prefs panel. If you play a tape with the Sound Prefs panel open do you see an indication on the Input Level meter that your are getting sound?
