Cannot Install FFMPEG
I have installed version 1.3.14 on my MAC Laptop. I am running Mac 10.6.8.
When I try to locate the FFmpeg file (libavformat.52.dylib) using the locate function under the FFmpeg Import/Export Library section, I receive the following message:
Location of 'libmp3lame.dylib':
/usr/local/lib/audacity/libmp3lame.dylib
Based on everything I can find and read, this window should be asking for file libavformat.52.dylib.
I have version 1.3.13 running on my MAP desktop and it does ask for the correct file (libavformat.52.dylib)
On my laptop, I have changed the name of the file from /usr/local/lib/audacity/libmp3lame.dylib to /usr/local/lib/audacity/libavformat.52.dylib and that does not work.
Is this a bug in 1.3.14? Any suggestions?

Re: Cannot Install FFMPEG
We need one giant step backwards and tell us what you're doing. What's the job? Exactly.
One driver is for MP3 export and the other is for FFMpeg format conversion. We won't know what you need until you tell us what's what.
You should get the drivers and Audacity 1.3 from the same place.
http://audacityteam.org/download/
The drivers should launch their own installer and find the install folders by themselves.
I would delete both of the ones you touched and download both fresh.
Restart Audacity before you try to do any work.

Re: Cannot Install FFMPEG
Koz,
I did delete Audacity from the applications folder and also deleted the Audacity folder found in /usr/library/program support. I downloaded a new version of Audacity and installed it.
I did download the install file for FFmpeg. I ran the install program and all the files are in the "/usr/library/program support/audacity/" location.
I go to the audacity preferences menu and scroll down and click on "Libraries". There it asks for 2 different libraries. At the top is the MP3 Library Version:LAME 3.98.2. If I Click on the MP3 Library: "Locate" button a new window pops open titled "Locate Lame". In this window "Audacity needs the file limp3lane.dylib: The path shows /usr/local/lib/audacity/limp3lame.dylib.
The next section down is the FFmpeg Import/Export Library. When I click on the FFmpeg Library "Locate" button the new window is titled "Locate FFmpeg. In this window "Audacity needs the file 'libmp3lame.dylib' to import and export audio via FFmpeg. The path shows /usr/local/lib/audacity/libmp3lame.dylib.
Here is where I think the problem is. The window "Locate FFmepg", is looking for the "libmp3lame.dylib" file and not the correct FFmpeg file "libavformat.52.dylib" file. I have tried to put the correct file name in this window instead of "libmp3lame.dylib" but Audacity still cannot find the file.
On my desk top MAC running Audacity version 1.3.13, I do get the correct prompt when the Locate FFmpeg window opens. (Audacity needs the file 'libavformat.52.dylib' to import and export audio via FFmpeg).
One other thing is the location Audacity is looking to find the file. The install program placed the files in "/usr/library/program support/audacity/". The pop-up window when you try to locate the files via audacity has "/usr/local/lib/audacity/". I don't know if this is also causing an issue.
Hope this is a little clearer.

Re: Cannot Install FFMPEG
We have had problems for the last two releases of OS X that the location the offered LAME and FFmpeg installers install to (/usr/local/lib/audacity/) is often locked out by Apple. So we are hoping that installers that install to /Library/Application Support/audacity/libs can be offered some time.rwresh wrote: I did download the install file for FFmpeg. I ran the install program and all the files are in the "/usr/library/program support/audacity/" location.
However the installers from http://lame1.buanzo.com.ar/ should both still be installing to usr/local/lib/audacity/ unless someone has changed the FFmpeg installer recently without telling anyone.
And do you mean "/usr/library/Application Support/audacity/"?
The text "Audacity needs the file 'libmp3lame.dylib' to import and export audio via FFmpeg" doesn't make sense to me. The "path" that shows should be the default path /usr/local/lib/audacity/libavformat-52.dylib until you successfully show Audacity another path to libavformat-52.dylib.rwresh wrote: The next section down is the FFmpeg Import/Export Library. The path shows /usr/local/lib/audacity/libmp3lame.dylib.
For now, could you please:
1 ) Go to ~/Library/Application Support/audacity/ (that is, the Library in your home folder) and save the "audacity.cfg" file as "audacity.txt". Then upload it using "Upload attachment" underneath where you post your replies.
2) Click Help > Show Log... then click Log > Save... and attach the log in the same way.
After that, try using this zip file for FFmpeg:
http://lame1.buanzo.com.ar/FFmpeg_v0.6. ... on_OSX.zip .
Extract the "libavformat-52.dylib" file into the folder you have Audacity installed into. Then try to browse for and open that dylib file using the "Locate FFmpeg" dialogue.
If that doesn't work, exit Audacity, open audacity.cfg and try changing the value of "FFmpegLibPath" to the location of the Audacity installation folder with
/libavformat-52.dylib
at the end of that location.
Thanks,
Gale

Re: Cannot Install FFMPEG
Gale,
The FFmpeg installer is installing the files in path /~/Library/Application Support/Audacity. I have deleted the Audacity folder from this path many times and the installer always recreates the audacity folder and puts all the files back in the same path.
I have tried to place the libavformat-52.dylib file in the audacity folder and it still cannot be found. I have tried the .zip download and placed the files in other locations and audacity cannot find the files regardless of where I put them.

I cannot find a file named audacity.cfg anywhere in my computer. I have attached file "window 3" showing the contents of the /~/Library/Application Support/audacity/" folder after running the installer program for FFmpeg.

I have attached 2 files showing the windows ("window 1" & "window 2") I get when trying to install the FFmpeg files.
Just to clarify, my MAC Desk Top is running Aducaty 1.3.13 and the correct file (libavformat-52.dylib) does show up when browsing for the FFmpeg file to install. My laptop is running Audacity 1.3.14 and as you can see in the uploaded file "windows 3" it shows "'libmp3lame.dylib".

Gale,
In case I did not specify the correct path in my latest post, it is /~/Library/Application Support/audicity.

Re: Cannot Install FFMPEG
Ron,
Thanks for the images.
Let's sort out audacity.cfg first. If you have never quit 1.3.14 or some earlier 1.3 version on that machine, audacity.cfg won't exist. But let's have a .cfg that's fresh from the factory. Download the attached "audacity.txt" and rename it to audacity.cfg.
Quit Audacity.
Use the Go button in Finder to go to ~/Library/Application Support/audacity/ (that is, the Library in your home folder). If you see those ffmpeg files in there (ffmpeg, the gpl-v3.txt and the eight files whose names start with lib), delete them. Now paste in the audacity.cfg that you just renamed. Overwrite the old audacity.cfg if you are asked.
Forget the FFmpeg installer.
Now launch Audacity and see if you can point "Locate FFmpeg" to libavformat-52.dylib in the Audacity installation directory. Where is that Audacity installation directory?
If there is still a problem, please click Help > Show Log... (in Audacity) then click Log > Save... and attach the log file. If it's easier, right-click or CTRL - click in the log > Select All, then copy the text and paste it in here. It's important to see it hence why I asked last time.
Thanks,
Gale

Re: Cannot Install FFMPEG
Gale,
I downloaded the file "audacity.txt" file, renamed it to "audacity.cfg", erased the audacity folder contents in path /~/Library/Application Support/Audacity and placed the file "audacity.cfg" in the audacity folder at path /~/Library/Application Support/audacity.
I downloaded the zip version for FFmpeg, unzipped the file and placed the entire folder named "FFmpeg_v0.6.2_for_Audacity_on_OSX" in the Applications folder for Audacity. (see attachment "window 5). File "Window 6" shows the contents of the FFmpeg_v0.6.2_for_Audacity_on_OSX folder.
I started Audacity, went to the preferences menu, selected Libraries, and then used the Locate button for FFmpeg. I typed in path /Applications/Audacity/FFmpeg_v0.6.2_for_Audacity_on_OSX/libavformat.52.dylib. I then pressed "Browse". It did not find the correct file. I have attached the log from this attempt as you requested (log.txt).
Hope this helps,
Ron

Re: Cannot Install FFMPEG
Ron,
Thanks for the log and your persistence.
I don't think we're too sure what is going on at the moment. The owner of the lame1 site isn't replying right now, but Leland will take a look at this later today. However he confirms the path /~/Library/Application Support/audacity" is invalid.
So I've changed the link in the FFmpeg FAQ to another installer:
http://www.gaclrecords.org.uk/FFmpeg_v0 ... on_OSX.dmg
Can you see if that installs to /usr/local/lib/audacity ? That is a valid path, but may have issues if Mac locks /usr/local/ so that Audacity can't read it with normal user permissions.
/~/Library/Application Support/audacity and ~/Library/Application Support/audacity . However the latter (without preceding "/") IS the standard way to express the path to the folder that contains audacity.cfg. Also I don't understand in your images why the Audacity and FFmpeg folders appear under "Devices". Can Bill or Koz provide some input on that? Where would Ron expect to see Application Support/audacity in his home library in that Finder tree?
Note that typing the path in Locate FFmpeg has no effect at all (on Windows, anyway) - it's just an indicator of the current path. You have to press "Browse" then physically navigate through the folders to libavformat-52.dylib, then select it and open it. In your case you would have to open the FFmpeg folder in the file window to select libavformat-52.dylib.
Anyhow, could you try the different Mac FFmpeg installer linked to above, AND try moving the FFmpeg folder to "Desktop" (top of "PLACES" in your image). Then try navigating into that FFmpeg folder on "Desktop" and opening "libavformat-52.dylib" from Browse as above.
Thanks
Gale

What you're seeing is the DMGs for Audacity and FFmpeg after they have been expanded and "mounted" on his machine. Those images are for "removable media", thus they have the "eject" button beside them. Other window images he provided show that he's put the FFmpeg folder inside the Audacity folder inside Applications, thus:
/Applications/Audacity/FFmpeg_v0.6.2... [etc]
Thus when clicking the "Locate" button in the Prefs window he should navigate to that location:
- start by clicking the "Browse" button in the "Locate FFmpeg" window
- in the resulting file-open dialog:
- click "Applications" in the sidebar of the file open dialog
- open the "Audacity" folder
- open the "FFmpeg..." folder
- click on the file libavformat52.dylib
- click the Open button
