Is there a way to filter out the sound of an inhalation?

Hi All:

First time posting, as I couldn't find this in previous posts, and I am not sure what to look for anyway...

I am doing podcasts and narrations, using Audacity 1.3 on an iMac 24". I am using an Electro Voice 320, a PreSounus AudioBox 22vsl, and of course, Audacity. I am getting some great recordings, but i am also getting the intake breaths when reading...

Is there a filter (or technique short of manually doing it) to remove the 'breath' sounds that I hear when inhaling? I try to turn my head away from the mic, and still hear them. I am manually going through each recording to add silence by selecting the sections of the recording and hitting the Ctrl L command, but this is very time consuming.

I have tried the 'noise removal' filter, and it removes the frequencies from the whole recording and creates a 'canned' sound that is definitely not usable on the whole recording. Short of selecting each breathing pause, and adding silence, I don't know a way to automate this....

Attached is a snip of what i am referring to. Some are much more noticeable than this one, but this is what I want to remove in general.

Many thanks for the advice.

Mark

I applied Noise Gate which slices off any sounds quieter than a certain value.

Level Reduction -20
Gate Threshold -40
Attack 250

Using the drop-down menu for the track (left), Waveform dB. That will make the gasps much more visible. Pick the highest blue wave during the gasps and that's the threshold -- or slightly above.

Reduction is pretty self explanatory. 6dB is only half. 20dB is half multiplied more than three times.

Attack keeps the tool from cutting off syllables.

Enjoy,

Koz

YES like that!

Thanks for the help! I will try it also on my more audible breathing and see of that takes away the quieter parts of the rest of the reading.

However, it is a new tool I had not tried yet... Many Thanks Koz!

Uhhh, I have a TON of Audacity plug in effects posted here, but I don't see noise gate. Any idea where I can buy/download the plug in?

Or is it somewhere else in the program?

The latest (and recommended) version of noisegate.ny is here: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Nyqui ... Noise_Gate

The thing does work by sound level, so if your gasping gets too loud, you may start to sheer off parts of the speech -- not be able to separate them.

No-one has yet mentioned microphone technique ...

If you are hearing breath intakes, perhaps the mic is too close to your mouth? Perhaps you are speaking too quietly?

I was going to go there, but the dialog portion sounded pretty good with no other distortions or damage.

It did sound, however, like the poster is a fifteen pack a day smoker (gasp, wheeze).
