I have a folder (see the content in attached jpg), but no audacity.cfg file there
Did you go to the extra effort to install Portable Audacity? If you don't remember that, then probably not.
No I didn't
Did it. The files appear to be regular MP3 files. I can open them with QT and other audio players without any problem.
But the question was do you have QuickTime 7. We have to have a very high granularity conversation here. No skipping questions or glossing over details.
What "other audio players?"
Yes, I have QT7. I can open the the files with QT7, Vox, and Fission.

Koz
Yes Audacity is in the Applications folder. You can see the content in the jpg.

I suggest you exit or force-quit Audacity, rename the attached to "audacity.cfg" (without quotes) then paste it into ~/Library/Application Support/audacity/. Reboot then launch Audacity. That .cfg stops Audio Unit and VST' plug-ins loading so removes them from the equation. Audio Units are in a thread that crashed.
YESSSSS. It worked. I did what you said and now Audacity is working again.

Many many thanks!!!!!
Does this mean I have some bad AU/VST or else?
Btw I opened the files I was previously mentioning without any problem.
Gale Andrews wrote:"Right-click > Open with not working" is a problem that someone else had without there being a resolution to it:

To fix it you could try Go > Utilities > Disk Utilities. Select your system drive and Verify Disk, then when that's done, Repair Permissions. If that doesn't help, see if anything mentioned in that thread may be relevant.

Right-click > Open with now is working again as well.
Again, thank you very much. You guys rock.

I'm glad it's fixed.
To find out if the problem was AU or VST you would have to go to the "Effects" section of the Audacity Preferences, check the box to enable one or both of AU or VST under "Enable Effects", then restart Audacity. If you don't need AU or VST effects then you can leave those settings as they are.
There is an occasional (not understood) problem on Mac where Audacity will become unusable and freeze/crash after importing a file, until the system is rebooted. This usually applies to WAV or AIFF files, but could apply to other files. It is assumed to be some kind of memory corruption. You could have experienced that.
